Our nickname is the Pineknotters

What, You Ask, Is a Pineknotter?
"Pine"
is a versatile evergreen, "Knot" is a hard piece of wood growing from a branch.  We have been and will be versatile and hard. The "Pine Tree"  gives us a vision of pride, standing erect.  The "Knot" strength...The will to win.

The late George Donachy

excerpted from the Northumberland Alumni Book 1883-1965

Did you ever try to cover a pine knot with paint?  It didn't work did it?  The resin seeped through.  Pineknotter Spirit is like that.  In spite of the diverse and sundry things that have happened to our community over the years, the Pineknotter Spirit has seeped through and continues to shine.  It shines in the volunteer organizations that are active in the community - the Pineknotter Day Association, the Northumberland Improvement Committee, the Recycling Association, the Library Board, the Liberty Pool Committee, the Kiwanis, and others.  It lives on in the youth organizations - the Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, Midget Football, AYSO Soccer and Little League.  It lives on in our churches which continue to provide the spiritual underpinnings of our community.  It lives on in the members of these organizations and volunteers who give of their time, talent and money to make the community a good place in which to live and love and raise their families.  You don't have to be an alumnus of the Northumberland-Point Township schools to be a Pineknotter, you can claim that title by your Pineknotter Spirit; by being one of those who continue to make our community one in which we can all take pride.

Times have changed since Northumberland was founded in 1772, since the public schools began in 1872, and since the Northumberland-Point Township School District merged with our neighboring school district and changed its name in 1965, but the Pineknotter Spirit lives on.
